Fire safety

 

In the event of a fire, get out, stay out, call 999 and ask for the fire & rescue service. You will only be allowed to re-enter the building once it is safe.

  • There should be at least one working smoke alarm on each floor level of your home. Test them weekly by pressing the button, don’t tamper with them. Be safe - never ignore a sounding smoke or fire alarm in your house or building.
  • Cooking fires can spread quickly. Never leave your food cooking unattended, avoid cooking if you have been drinking alcohol. Do not cover microwaves and follow the cooking instructions for appliances.
  • Stay safe with candles and cigarettes, check first if you are allowed them in your accommodation. Never smoke in bed, use a proper ashtray and only smoke in designated areas.
  • Don’t leave electrical items such as laptops, mobile phones or e-cigs charging overnight or unattended and don’t overload sockets (see more on our electrical safety page).
  • Never place hot items such as hair dryers or straighteners on surfaces which may catch fire such as your bed or carpet.
  • Don’t prop or wedge a fire door open, a closed one could save your life!

Hoax calls

 

You should be aware that making hoax calls is a criminal offence. Making a hoax call is not only illegal, it is also dangerous. Fire crews and other emergency services sent out in response to a hoax call cannot attend a real emergency. Following up these calls puts lives and properties at extra risk.

 

 

Know your escape route

 

Make sure you are prepared should an emergency arise:

 

  • Plan an escape route and make sure everyone knows how to escape.

  • Make sure exits are kept clear.

  • The best route is the normal way in and out of your home.

  • Think of a second route in case the first one is blocked, take a few minutes to practice your escape plan.

  • Review your plan if the layout of your home changes.

  • Keep the door and window keys where everyone can find them, however, do not leave keys in door locks as this could attract burglars.
